Foreign Service Officer Test (09/16/2008)

Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT) – Americans only. The FSOT is given quarterly now.  All registrations for the FSOT must be completed online at www.careers.state.gov. Test seats are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

The tests are given at U.S. Embassies worldwide as well as in Washington, D.C. The next test given this year at the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent will be on November 5. October 23 is the deadline for candidates intending to test overseas to submit a completed Registration Package. Registrants must have an email address to use throughout the selection process. Those requesting reasonable accommodation are urged to submit the registration package at least three weeks prior to the requested test date to ensure that the requested accommodation can be arranged by the test date.

There are several important eligibility requirements:

  • All applicants must be U.S. citizens on the date they submit their registration package.
  • On the day you submit your registration, you must be at least 20 years old and no older than 59 years of age.
  • On the day you are appointed as a Foreign Service Officer, you must be at least 21 years old, and not yet 60.
  • You must also be available for worldwide assignments, including Washington, D.C
