Warden Message - May 27, 2009
Uzbek officials today confirmed recent media reports of a suicide bombing in the city of Andijan in the Ferghana Valley region of Uzbekistan and an assault on a border post near the town of Khanabad on the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border. There are conflicting reports as to whether the southern border with Kyrgyzstan has been temporarily closed. The U.S. Embassy will continue to monitor the situation and to provide information on any new developments.
The U.S. Embassy would like to take this opportunity to remind U.S. Citizens that a Travel Warning for Uzbekistan remains in effect. The Department of State continues to urge Americans in Uzbekistan to exercise caution when traveling in the region.
For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Alerts, and Travel Warnings, including the Travel Warning for Uzbekistan, can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, by calling a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
