American Book Donation Builds School Library (11/15/2008)
Scholastic’s Secondary Ambassador Package provides students with updated reference books and classic American novels.
Students at the Syrdarya Regional Boarding School of Foreign Languages have an expanded library thanks to the U.S. Embassy’s donation of over 100 new reference and fiction books complied by Scholastic Books. The donated books include a variety of encyclopedias, biographies of famous American and foreign figures, including renowned Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, as well classic American novels.
Through its Public Affairs Office, the U.S. Embassy offers supports to a number of educational institutions throughout the republic of Uzbekistan, including institutions in Bukhara, Samarkand, Ferghana and Urgench. Ambassador Norland presented the books to the school on behalf of the Embassy during a November 2008 trip to Guliston. During the visit, Ambassador Norland welcomed the opportunity to chat informally with students and answer questions regarding American politics and culture.
