Remarks by Ambassador Richard B. Norland (09/11/2008)

September 11 Remembrance
Sept. 11, 2008 – 5:30 p.m. – U.S. Embassy

Thank you for taking time out of your day to join the people all around the world who are gathering today to remember the events of September 11, 2001. We all remember where we were that horrible day.

We remember those who died, including a citizen of Uzbekistan who was in the World Trade Center when it fell. Her name was Gavhar Qamariddinova. She was studying in the United States and had taken a job working in the World Trade Center only ten days before the tragedy. We remember that terrorists attack indiscriminately, killing the innocent to make political points.  We remember that representatives of all religious faiths, having seen the horrors of terrorism, have rejected terrorism as a means to achieve political ends. We remember the many brave men and women from the United States and from other countries around the world who have heeded the call to action of September 11. We also remember our many colleagues, in the military and in the Foreign Service, who are directly in harm’s way in Afghanistan and Iraq, and those who have paid the ultimate price for their service. We remember that here in Uzbekistan, we too are playing our part in supporting global efforts to root out the seeds of terrorism and build a world of peace.

And in remembering, let us move forward and rededicate ourselves to creating a future for our children and grandchildren where terrorism no longer exists. Thank you for what each of you does here every day to advance this noble goal. It is an honor to be serving in Tashkent with you.
