UzExide Automobile Battery Plant officials give Ambassador Norland a grand tour

U.S. Investment at Work in Jizzakh (02/29/2008)

On February 29, U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan Richard Norland traveled to Jizzakh.  He met with the acting Provincial Hokim Musa Anarbaev, toured the UzExide Automobile Battery Plant, and visited the Museum of Hamid Alimjan.

He also met with human rights activists, and shared lunch with alumni of the U.S.-supported Community Connections and Partners in Education exchange programs.

The Uzbek-U.S. joint venture UzExide Automobile Battery Plant gave Ambassador Norland a tour of their facilities. Formed in 1998, UzExide Automobile Battery Plant is a joint venture between U.S. company Exide AB Group and Uzbek partners Uzavtosanoat and Dzhizakkakumulyator, and required $78 million to build.  The plant currently employs more than 400 people and has produced more than one million batteries since its opening in 2003.

The Ambassador concluded his visit with a stop at the Museum of Hamid Alimjan.  The museum displays in photos, paintings, and literature the life of one of Jizzakh’s favorite sons -- the gifted Uzbek poet and writer Hamid Alimjan (1909-1944).  In addition to a private tour of the museum, the American delegation enjoyed a song and dance performance to commemorate the Alimjan family’s contributions to Uzbekistan.
