Uzbek Pilaf and Music Mark Opening of New Embassy Annex (02/28/2008)

On February 28, the Embassy celebrated the opening of its new annex, which consolidates all U.S. Embassy operations on one compound.

After Ambassador Norland’s opening remarks, representatives of the construction company Star Memor joined him in cutting the ribbon.  All Embassy employees then had the opportunity to tour the new facility.

Built in eight months, the building features state-of-the-art equipment for mechanics to repair embassy vehicles.  The structure also includes changing rooms, storage lockers, kitchenettes, and recreational equipment for security guards and night duty drivers, and a storage and work area for the gardening staff.  To economize, the new building made use of lighting and heating/air conditioning systems from the old Chancery.

Following the tour, the Embassy enjoyed traditional Uzbek pilaf and a cultural performance by talented embassy employees: opera by Guard and tenor Aleksey, Mailperson Abdufattakh’s performance on the Dutar (an Uzbek traditional two-string instrument), national Uzbek dance by USAID staff person Nilufar, American songs by Cleaning Lady Lylya, and a Tatar song by Gardener Rustam.
