U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to Visit Uzbekistan

U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will visit Uzbekistan during December 7-8. The Secretary is scheduled to meet in Tashkent with President Islam Karimov, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov, Defense Minister Kadir Gulamov and other senior government officials.
During his visit to Tashkent, Secretary Powell will consult with President Karimov and members of his government on a broad range of bilateral and multilateral issues including the global coalition against terrorism. His discussions will encompass the immediate and long-term challenges of rebuilding a post- Taliban Afghanistan. Following their meeting, Secretary Powell and President Karimov will hold a joint press conference at the Presidency.
Secretary Powell will also visit the Tashkent Public Education Center, a grassroots, non -government organization dedicated to building a civil society in Uzbekistan. There he will speak about the importance of civic education to an audience of Uzbek children and their teachers. He will also observe student council elections at the center.
Secretary of State Powell is on a ten-nation visit to Europe and Eurasia. His trip began with his participation in a meeting in Bucharest, Romania of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Secretary also attended meetings in Brussels at NATO headquarters and participated in a NATO-EU ministerial meeting.
