Ambassador Visits English Language Learning Center (05/08/09)
U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland visited the Republican Language Center in Tashkent on May 8 to meet with young students and show support for the educational opportunities offered at the center.
It was Norland’s first visit to the Republican Language Center, which is under the Uzbek State University of World Languages. The Language Center offers language instruction in Uzbek, English, Russian, French, Korean, Chinese, German and Spanish to students at various levels. It also houses an English-language resource library, and is the home of the university’s Spanish faculty. Many of the students in the English classes are secondary students.
Ambassador Norland spoke with students and met with Abdulla Ismailov, the Rector of the Uzbek State University of World Languages, and Muhamadavvas Iriskulov, the director of the Republican Language Center. The Ambassador congratulated the students on their efforts to learn foreign languages, a skill that could open many opportunities for them.
“I encourage you to seek your own opportunities to enrich your educational experience, study hard, and never give up,” he said. Learning English can open a window to new ideas, and could help the students find jobs, he added.
The students gave a presentation in English of skits, songs and dances, including one of traditional American folk dancing.
The U.S. Embassy and the Uzbek State University of World Languages have cooperated for years on developing English-language instruction. The Embassy supports a wide range of English-language programs and educational opportunities for students, teachers, and scholars.
The Embassy encourages people to use its Educational Advising Center and Information Resource Center to seek out new educational opportunities and build on their English-language skills.
