Public Affairs Section
Public diplomacy provides opportunities for the people of two nations to learn about each other in ways that offcial means along can not achieve. To assist such contact, as well as to explain and support U.S. foreign policy and promote U.S. national interests, the U.S. Government has established a range of exchange, training and information programs. In Uzbekistan and at U.S. Embassies all over the world, these functions are performed by Public Affairs Sections.
PAS administers a variety of educational exchange programs, including the prestigious Fulbright program. Large numbers of students come to the U.S. each year to take advantage of our advanced and specialized educational programs. PAS also administers an Education Advising Center, which provides valuable information to individuals who are thinking of studying in the U.S.: how to go about finding an appropriate university, how to apply, where to take entrance exams and how to prepare for student life in America.
The Cultural Specialist organizes exchanges of cultural and artistic work, including the Jazz Ambassadors. This section organizes a range of professional Level exchange trips to the United States. Themed exhibitions of American Culture including, Rodeo, Modern Art, and Contemporary Music are supported by the U.S. Embassy. In addition to this, the Exchanges section of Public Affairs strives to develop and maintain contacts with leaders in the educational, cultural, and artistic communities.
The main office of the Public Affairs Section in Washington produces an electronic file, the Washigton File, every week day, that is sent to local government officials and members of the press around the world. This file contains official U.S. Government policy statements and texts. Note that a Russian Edition is also available, with key items of the Washington File translated into Russian. It can be downloaded onto a hard disk and read through a Russian word processor. For information about other press services, please contact the Public Affairs Section.
PAS also maintains the Information Resource Center (IRC), which is open to the public by appointment. It has a reference book collection on the United States and on teaching English as a second language. English teachers may wish to inspect the list of EFL books for sale, produced by our head office in Washington, which can be ordered at reasonable prices. There is also an excellent periodical database available for those who would like to do research in various fields.
The Press Office works closely with Uzbek and third-country media to provide timely and substantive information on U.S. government policies and current issues. Journalists may contact the Press Office via phone, fax or e-mail.
